By Light Space Yoga   /

Are you new to the world of yoga (or returning after a hiatus?) and want a gentle yet effective start to your practice? Let’s explore five fundamental yoga poses that are perfect for beginners. These poses will not only help you build a solid foundation for your yoga journey but also promote physical strength, flexibility, and inner tranquility. So, roll out your mat, take a deep breath, and begin…

1. Mountain Pose (Tadasana)

Mountain Pose is the perfect starting point for every yoga practice. It may seem simple, but it forms the basis of many other poses and helps you develop awareness of your posture and breath. It’s also a wonderful pose for focus and a deep inner awareness. In this pose, stand tall with your feet together or hip-width apart. Ground your feet firmly into the mat, engage your thigh muscles, and lengthen your spine. Relax your shoulders, lift your chest, and gently tuck your chin. Breathe deeply, and imagine yourself as a strong and steady mountain. The added benefits of Mountain Pose including are that it helps promote correct posture and brings awareness to your feet and your foundation. This pose stabilses the mind, and encourages focus and stability.

2. Low Lunge (Anjaneyasana)

Low Lunge is a powerful pose that stretches and strengthens the legs, hips, and quadriceps. Start in a plank position and step one foot forward between your hands. Lower your back knee to the mat and inhale as you lift your arms above your head. Keep your front knee directly above your ankle, gently tuck your tailbone and lift your chest to open the heart. This pose is a great way to cultivate balance and stability. It enhances lower body strength and flexibility, and it a wonderful pose to build awareness and mental focus.

3. Cobra (Bhujangasana)

Cobra Pose is an excellent beginner-friendly backbend that strengthens the spine and opens the chest, as well as lengthening the sides of the torso and stimulates the internal organs. The mental focus for this pose is particularly lovely – freedom and an open heart.  Lie face-down on the mat with your palms placed beside your shoulders. As you inhale, press into your hands and gently lift your chest off the ground, keeping your lower body and pelvis grounded. Draw your shoulder blades back and down to open your heart. Take a few breaths in this pose, feeling the rejuvenating stretch along your spine.

5. Tree Pose (Vrksasana)

Tree Pose is a classic balance pose that enhances focus and concentration while strengthening your legs and core. Begin by standing tall and shift your weight onto one foot. Place the sole of the other foot against the inner thigh or calf of your standing leg, avoiding the knee. Still your eyes on one point out in front of you to help with your balance. Bring your palms to connect at your heart centre or extend them overhead like the branches of a tree. Embrace the gracefulness and stability of a tree swaying in the wind. This is a perfect pose to calm and still the mind, and to cultivate focus and awareness of your body.

5. Child’s Pose (Balasana)

Child’s Pose is a resting and grounding pose that helps you connect with your breath, release tension and calm your nervous system. Begin by kneeling on the mat with your big toes touching and knees apart. As you exhale, lower your torso between your thighs and extend your arms in front of you or rest them alongside your body. Let your forehead rest on the mat and completely surrender here. This pose is a beautiful way to find stillness while opening your hips and groin, and will always help you return to your centre (and your breath) during your practice.
