Balance, Boundaries & Mindfulness This Summer

Welcome to summer and one of the busiest times of the year! Whether you’re back at work with a huge to-do list or have children at home over the school holidays, this time of year can be really chaotic. With so much on your plate, it’s essential to reflect on how you’re honouring your time. If things feel overwhelming, it might be time to create space for yourself to process and recharge.

Here are a few simple ways to lighten your load and find moments of calm in the chaos:

  1. Light a candle and pause.
Spend just five minutes in a quiet room with a lit candle. Watch the flame as it flickers, then steadies and grows taller. Think of yourself as that flame – just a brief moment of stillness can help you feel more balanced and capable of managing life’s demands.
  2. Reduce screen time at night.
Instead of overloading your mind with TV, phones, or laptops, try therapeutic activities like journaling, walking, or tidying a drawer. These screen-free moments can help you release mental clutter and create a sense of calm.
  3. Do less to create more space.
Take on fewer tasks until you feel stronger. This might mean delegating housework or simplifying meals. Remind yourself that an unmade bed or takeaway dinner is temporary – it’s about giving yourself the breathing room you need.
  4. Set boundaries with your time.
It’s okay to say no to extra commitments or events that don’t bring you joy. Protect your calendar by prioritising only what truly matters to you and your well-being.
  5. Plan intentional downtime.
Block out time in your schedule for rest or activities that recharge you, like reading, taking a bath, spending intentional time with your family or practicing yoga. Treat this time as non-negotiable, just like any other appointment.
  6. Practice mindful breathing.
Take a moment between tasks to focus on your breath. Even a minute of slow,
  7. Delegate or ask for help.
You don’t have to do it all yourself. Whether it’s sharing household chores, asking a friend for a favour, or hiring help for errands, leaning on others can lighten your load.
  8. Spend time in nature.
Even a short walk outside can help ground you and provide perspective. Fresh air and movement are powerful ways to reset your energy.
  9. Stay hydrated and eat nourishing foods.
Busy times can lead to neglecting basic self-care. Drinking water and eating balanced meals will help sustain your energy and focus (and there are now plenty of options for a healthy takeaway meal if you’re focusing on step 3!)
  10. Turn ordinary moments into rituals.
Transform routine activities like making tea or stretching into mindful rituals. Use these moments to reconnect with yourself. Romanticise the small moments and they become meaningful and cup-filling.
  11. Celebrate small wins.
Acknowledge and celebrate what you accomplish each day, no matter how small. Gratitude for your efforts can shift your mindset and motivate you to keep going.
