Create Space For Your Practice This Christmas

Create Space

Christmas is the most magical time of the year…right? But sometimes it can lose that ‘magic’ feeling and quickly become about ticking off long ‘to-do’ lists,  more shopping around the market for the best ham, and managing a busy social calendar.

We can’t avoid the fact that we get busier over Christmas. Between Christmas functions, gift and food shopping, and party planning, it’s almost guaranteed that you are going to have less time than usual to fit in your yoga practice.

And you know what? That is perfectly OK. Here are a few little tips that might help:

  • Be kind to yourself – Just because you may not have time to practice as frequently as usual, doesn’t mean you have to be hard on yourself and have thoughts like ‘… it’s just too hard this week”. If you normally do 6 classes a week, perhaps reduce it to 3. If you usually go to 3 classes, you might want to scale down to one class. Allow your practice to fit in with your increased workload and be kind to yourself. Your practice will help you remain calm and focused.
  • Make the most of your time – Practise yoga while running errands. Try a mountain pose while you are waiting in the Christmas queues, or focus on some yogic breathing while you’re stuck in last minute Christmas shopping traffic.
  • Yoga can be done anywhere – Find some space at home to roll out your mat and give yourself just 5 minutes to stretch and breathe. Just a few minutes for ‘you’ can make all the difference to your day.

Christmas can enhance your levels of stress and anxiety, but try not to let it get the better of you.  By maintaining your yoga practice over this time, you can help reduce your stress levels and focus your mind. The goal is to work out how many classes you can realistically commit to.

Tis’ the season to be a yogi! x
