Spring: The Season of Growth & Abundance

The season of Spring is a time when we feel like we can come out of the dark and into the light. Most of us look forward to Spring for so many reasons. Longer days and warmer weather. Simply, some much missed and needed sunshine. It can be helpful to really take in nature as it shows us so beautifully that it is time for renewal. The scent of Spring, the creative aspect of nature and the real sense of new beginnings.

From a yoga perspective, this is the time of growth and abundance. It is an opportune time to spring clean the body after the hiatus of Winter. Spring can be the motivator to reignite some daily practices.

With a few daily rituals we can start to feel lighter and shed the heaviness of Winter. Shed our winter coat! You may notice a softness in the air.

Ayurvedic science (the ancient sister science to yoga) tells us that Spring is Kapha time. Kapha is our connection to the earth and water elements. When water and earth combine they encourage matter to grow. New life. We should aim to live in alignment with the seasons to support health and well being. Yoga is about balance and as we move further into the season of Spring we can harmoniously bring more balance into our lives.

Here are a few daily ideas:

  • Rise with the sun
  • Dry skin brushing before showering
  • Upon waking in the morning, drink hot water with a squeeze of lemon
  • Start or recommence a personal meditation practice
  • Begin your day by setting intentions for your day
  • Introduce breath practices to cleanse the body
  • Eat what is in season, avoiding heavy, oily foods
  • Continue with your asana practice to help maintain your energy and vitality
  • Take more time to walk in nature
  • Try an Abhyanga Ayurvedic massage

Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita

“I am the Soul of the body, the Mind in the senses, Eagle among birds, the Lion among animals. Among all the trees I am the sacred Bodhi tree, and of the seasons, I am Spring ”
